Why Suffer, When You Can Be Safe? #TogetherAgainstMeningitis

We live in an era where we are subject to numerous health risks due to modern lifestyle, air/soil/water pollution besides the already existing diseases in the environment. Doesn’t it make sense therefore to avail of safe and preventive measures such as vaccines that modern science offers us, to safeguard ourselves from potentially life-threatening and debilitating diseases?
I recently came across some chat forums on twitter discussing one such disease: Meningococcal Meningitis, a highly unpredictable and life-threatening disease that can be safely prevented with the aid of vaccines.

What is Meningococcal Meningitis?

Invasive Meningococcal Disease (IMD) is a rare but potentially devastating bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitis.1 It commonly present as an infection of the brain (meningitis) and/or infection of the blood (septicemia or blood poisoning).1 One in 10 people who develop the disease can die from it in as little as 24 hours while 10-20% of survivors suffer from serious complications such as amputation, scars, deafness or brain damage. 2, 3

How is it caused?

Around 10% of the population carries meningococcal bacteria in the back of their throats at any given time (carrier). Occasionally the bacteria defeat the body’s defenses and cause infection. Meningococcal disease is spread from person to person through respiratory droplets (e.g. coughing, sneezing, kissing).4

Who is at risk from Meningococcal Meningitis?

Children below 5 years of age, adolescents and young adults (15-19 years) with the highest carrier rate of the bacteria are at most risk. Increased risk factors include living in community settings, participating in mass gatherings. Basically, it can affect anyone, anywhere in the world, even healthy individuals without identifiable risk factors.5

What are the symptoms?

The early symptoms can be misleading as they are flu-like in nature (e.g. irritability, fever, loss of appetite) 6 and make diagnosis difficult.7 Signs of meningococcal meningitis include fever, headache, stiff neck, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion etc.6 However it is important to react as the disease can lead to death within 24 hours of onset.7, 8 Diagnosis involves testing samples of blood and cerebrospinal fluid for the Neisseria meningitis bacteria.7

Can Meningococcal Meningitis be prevented?

Yes! Vaccines can be given to infants as young as 9 months and works as the missing link for comprehensive protection against acute bacterial meningitis!11 Vaccines available in India can prevent four different types of bacterial serogroups that cause meningococcal meningitis.

Should you get Meningococcal Meningitis vaccination?

Armed with all this information, I am ready to take a stand against this dreadful disease. I plan to visit my doctor along with my teen son, discuss this life-saving vaccine and avail immunization at the earliest.

How about you? I strongly suggest that all parents get more information on meningococcal meningitis and how to prevent it by having a talk with their doctors. A simple timely vaccine can spare your family from this devastating disease.

It is after all, always better to be safe than sorry

Beat the Flu #MomVsFlu

My teen son is busy preparing for exams. I ensure he gets good rest and nutrition. He is healthy enough but prone to frequent attacks of cold and cough. I hope he doesn't catch the dreaded viral that seems to be affecting everyone with the changing season.
Hmm, when I think back, I remember he was virtually born with a runny nose!

In the last week of my pregnancy I was down with a severe bout of flu. I was horribly tired, with a constant sinus headache, aching limbs, nose blocks, well the entire package deal that comes with a flu attack! I avoided taking any medicines and went through labor in that condition itself. The baby, my son was thankfully born all normal! But within half a day I noticed the baby had trouble breathing while he was trying to feed. He'd contracted the rotten flu from me! I can't tell you what a trying ten days followed with sleepless nights and constant worrying over the tiny infant's health while I myself was still suffering from it! Eventually we both got better, after the pediatrician prescribed safe medication for us.

Back to the present, all these memories of the past came rushing back at me as I attended a blogger's event aimed at creating awareness and enlightening mothers about tackling influenza - MomVsFlu. It made me wish the flu vaccine had come into the picture back then! It could have saved me and my baby from having to suffer from all the misery of the nasty flu attack!

The event had an eloquent, expert panel comprising pediatrician Dr Mukesh Gupta and gynaecologist Dr Uday Pai explaining various aspects of an influenza attack, ways to combat it while busting some myths as well!
Most of us dismiss a flu attack as just the "common cold" when in fact they are both not the same.

So what is a Flu?
The Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza virus A/B/C. A flu attack can be mild to severe depending on the person's immunity. Flu spreads by touching, coughing, sneezing by flu-affected person. Closed indoor air-conditioned environments trigger easier spread of the flu virus.
Symptoms can be mild/high fever, chills, runny/stuffy nose, sore throat, muscle aches, headaches and tiredness. Simply put, these are symptoms that can put child/adult in sheer misery as long as the flu lasts.
Flu symptoms like tiredness and headache are more troublesome for children.
With the growing menace of the H1N1/Swine flu virus which can gain epidemic proportions, it becomes all the more important to monitor seemingly innocent symptoms like these.
People at risk to complications from influenza are pregnant women, children less than 5 years of age and elderly persons.

Pregnancy and Influenza
Dr Mukesh Gupta shared some insights on this aspect.
Immunity is low in pregnant women, their physiology of breathing is changed due to the developing foetus while the hormones affect lung secretions. These factors make an influenza attack on a pregnant women worrying. It is difficult to treat the expecting mother especially with restriction in medication that will be safe for both mother and foetus. Influenza in pregnancy can affect the mother's lung capacity leading to lower oxygen level supply to baby which may cause pre-term delivery while high grade fever in mother may lead to growth defects in baby.

The Influenza Vaccine
They are also called flu shots/jabs and they protect against infection from the influenza virus. Since the virus keeps rapidly changing, yearly fresh vaccines are developed. The vaccine takes 4-6 weeks to develop complete immunity hence needs to be taken before an epidemic like swine flu breaks out.
The best time to take these shots would be in the months of April-May-June. In a home with babies or small children, preferably go in for a 'Samuhik' vaccination says Dr Pai so that the entire family including the babies' caretakers is protected by the vaccine.

Dr Mukesh Gupta suggests women to take the flu vaccine as a part of the pre-conceptual planning, because only a healthy body can bring a healthy baby. But if one misses out the vaccine at that stage, one can still take the vaccine safely at any point of the pregnancy. The vaccine is completely safe for the breast-feeding mothers too.

Bollywood diva Genelia Deshmukh who graced the occasion, supports the initiative of Mothers Against Influenza (MAI)
She strongly urges all mothers to go from being Worriers to Warriors by simply talking to their pediatricians and gynaecologists to know more about influenza and staying protected with the vaccine.

Doesn't it make more sense to prevent an illness rather than treating it?
We as mothers need to make informed decisions to protect our family from becoming frequent victims to flu attacks, falling sick and needlessly suffering, especially when it is easily avoidable!
Worldwide the flu vaccine is widely prescribed annually to combat the seasonal attack by the unfriendly flu virus. It is time we take cognizance of this fact and equip ourselves to give our dear family a flu-free life. Every pregnant lady and every mother needs to be aware of this vaccine which can make life so much better and worry-free!
Lets go #MomVsFlu, shall we?

Spreading Smiles #ShishuSarothi

Featured post on IndiBlogger, the biggest community of Indian Bloggers

Isn't it a shame that people can be so indifferent and unfeeling towards differently-abled people? They are after all flowers from the same garden created by God, only with their own unique beauty. It is so unfair that these gentle, innocent children of God are deprived of their basic fundamental rights, rights that every human deserves!
Persons with disabilities suffer from lack of access to basic amenities like healthcare, education, livelihood, accessibility etc. that we take for granted. However for persons with developmental and intellectual disabilities, the situation is direr! Lack of basic awareness and information on how to take care of such fragile lives makes it all the more difficult.

The Disability scene in North-East India

A staggering 733,450 and growing number of People with Disabilities (PwDs) living in the eight North-East states according to 2011 national census are facing several challenges, including infrastructural barriers, stigma due to lack of awareness, geographical terrain making mobility difficult thereby difficulty in the accessibility of qualified rehabilitation professionals and assistive devices. Besides there are hardly any government schemes/services available for PwDs in this area.

Shishu Sarothi

I came across this not-for-profit CSO (Civil Society Organization) - Shishu Sarothi and I was very impressed by the kind of work they do to help people with disabilities, especially children. Their focus is on the social development and economic empowerment of this section of society in the North-East of India.  Some of the salient objectives of this unique organization are:
  • Enable access to appropriate and innovative therapies and interventions that facilitate inclusion into mainstream society of children and persons with disabilities.
  • Create a cadre of trained human resources and undertake research studies to build knowledge on disability in general and Cerebral Palsy and developmental disabilities in particular.
  • Sensitize all stakeholders, ensure implementation of legislation, facilitate redressal of grievances thereof and influence policy change.
  • Habilitate/rehabilitate children and persons with disabilities to help them achieve their full potential in a barrier free environment.
Shishu Sarothi's warmth, concern, support and humanitarian approach has brought back smiles and happiness into the lives of several young lives and their families.
The institution’s services include a Center for Inclusive and Vocational education, an Early Intervention Unit, The Information and Communication Technology Lab etc. All their programs work in tandem with the parents and caregivers. The institution has received several awards including the National Award for Best Institution (Additional) from the President of India (2004).

Success Stories

One of Shishu Sarothi’s many success stories is, young Puja Das. She was assessed with Cerebral Palsy and athetoid and came to Shishu Sarothi with involuntary physical movement, muscle tone fluctuation, delayed mental development and speech impairment.

After joining the activities for the Playgroup into which she was enrolled she slowly and steadily made swift progress with expert help and counseling in all aspects of her learning, be it General knowledge, Academic to basic physical skills like eating & drinking, managing her daily activities by herself, grooming skills, communication with others etc. Her emotional and social skills also improved remarkably.
She now regularly participates and enjoys all events and celebrations organized at the school. The feather on the cap is her winning several competitions in arts and sports conducted by the foundation as well as in the Special Olympics 2014 held at Guwahati.

Tanya Agarwal (name changed) came to the Early Intervention Unit (EIU) when she was just 6 months old. Detailed assessment indicated developmental delays with no head control and hypotonic muscle tone. The EIU team worked actively for over 2 years with her parents by giving head control exercises, deep joint pressure, muscle strenghtening and other appropriate exercises for improving her posture and positioning. Today Tanya is able to walk without any support; her cognition has improved and follows simple commands. Her confidence has grown vastly and she can now play with her peers.

You can help make a change

I am feeling so heartened to read the success stories of these little angels. What a change the love, dedication and concentrated efforts of the dedicated team at Shishu Sarothi has made to so many young lives!

Dear friends, I request you all to visit this wonderful, life-uplifting institution - Shishu Sarothi - and see for yourself the tremendous work they are accomplishing.
I strongly urge you to support them and to donate generously to their wonderful mission here.

You can help make a change in the lives of children with disabilities who are unable to access support due to lack of resources. Every child deserves a shot at happiness.
The lovely smile, the innocent laughter of a child with disability and the pride in the eyes of the parents at the positive progress, the chance to lead a life like any other child, are priceless!

You can make a difference, you can help in spreading smiles!

Smart Moms Start Early #FeedIQ

"What? Only one spoonful of ghee?" exclaims my gran indignantly as she snatches the bottle from my hand and goes on to ladle four more spoonsful. "Now, that's more like it! Tell me what do you feel like eating? Shall I make your favourite mysorepak or maybe some badam halwa? I'll make both of them," she decides.

I was on the fifth month of my pregnancy, already having gained some 10+ kgs since the onset of the term with four more months of such decadency ahead! I dreaded passing by a mirror and worse stepping on the weighing scales, as my gynaec looked disapprovingly at my excessive weight gain. Fast forward four months ahead, I was 18 kgs bulkier from my pre-pregnancy weight. Thankfully the delivery was smooth but I never managed to completely shed all the extra kgs I'd gained by eating for two, succumbing to my gastronomic cravings and the pampering foodie love showered by family and friends.

A first time mother goes from being a naive, inexperienced person to assuming the mantle of motherhood, learning all about taking care of her new-born partly through instinct and partly with help and advice from elders in her family and her support system. Nutrition during pregnancy has always been considered important. That an expecting mother should be fed with the choicest of nutritious foods and be kept in a happy frame of mind is not something new.

With evolving technology, mothers now have the added advantage of modern research and studies within their reach to help them on the journey of motherhood at every stage. I wish I had known during my pregnancy some very informative and interesting facts that I am about to share with you.

Did you know that,
A child's brain development begins from conception, with 90% of the child's brain development happening by the age of 2 years

Requisite right nutrition, and stimulation or infant brain exercises are necessary to build neural connections and encourage brain growth, both crucial factors for a child's brain development?

Genetics also affect the brain development of a child but since they cannot be altered, would-be moms and new moms need to focus on getting the nutrition and stimulation aspects right.

Have you to-be moms heard of Feed IQ?

Feed IQ literally means that a mother feeds 'IQ' to her baby through breastfeeding and stimulation i.e. infant brain exercises.

Mommies to-be and new mommies you gotta START EARLY!

Nutrition for brain development of infants

Nutrition during pregnancy and lactation impacts the growth and development of the foetus and adds to the maturity of a healthy baby. The right nutrition during pregnancy leads to improved health of the baby. Mother's diet is the primary source of energy, protein and other nutrients in breast milk. Insufficient calories or lack of macro and micronutrients during pregnancy can result in shortage of building materials essential for foetal development. Pre-term infants need high energy and micronutrients to prevent further deficiencies and support normal growth

Today, with improved awareness and proven research, many myths surrounding nutrition during pregnancy have been bust. Most pregnant women have to hear, "Don't eat this, don't eat that, are you eating enough....!" and when they are new mothers, they get unsolicited advice from everyone possible on how to raise the baby right!

Gran darling, I do wish you could have read this: Common Myths and Facts about Pregnancy Nutrition.

Brain exercise for child brain development

The age-old traditions of a pregnant woman listening to soothing music and chanting progressing to singing lullabies, making babyish conversations, playing peek-a-boo, stacking toys, sorting shapes, reading out aloud, finger painting, dancing,  etc. with the infant are important activities that are now called 'brain exercises' that help a baby's brain develop.
An interesting fact is that the amount of cumulative vocabulary by 2 years of age in a child is enormously predictive of later brain development of the child's IQ.

Brain exercises with increasing levels of complexity starting from the time the child is born up to two years of age will help develop the baby's vision, hearing, tactile/sensory, linguistic and cognitive skills. Do look up here to enrich your baby's cognitive development.

Here are some helpful pointers for new moms to monitor and gauge the child's development:

To all dear expecting moms, new moms of pre-term, full-term babies,
You need to be aware of the impact your diet has on the growth and development of your child. Right nutrition combined with stimulating infant brain exercises will ensure the right development of your baby's brain. You could look up this extremely resourceful website for more information:
https://simmom.in

Be aware, be informed, eat right, be happy and have and raise a healthy baby!
Remember you gotta START EARLY!

Spreading Thyroid Awareness #RuleOutThyroWeight

There are quite a few women in my acquaintances that I am in awe of. One of them is my friend Sona (name changed), working mother of two. This lady is a bundle of energy and sunshine, always on her toes with a wide smile on her face. One day when she stayed over at my place on an official trip, I observed her popping a pill first thing in the morning. When I asked her about it, she casually mentioned that she suffers from hypothyroidism and has been on medication for years. On probing further she explained that in her late teens she suddenly started putting on weight and felt tired all the time. Despite following a strict diet, neither the weight nor her lethargy and fatigue decreased. Though the weight gain wasn't substantial, her parents were worried about it. A visit to the physician and a few tests later she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and put on a lifelong dose for the same. The results of the medication were almost miraculous, she says and I can well believe it as I have seen her bustling about, juggling a family and a successful career, all with a cheerful smile.

This revelation about my friend led me to wonder about Thyroid Disorders. It is baffling to know that 1 in 10 Indians suffer from thyroid disorders of which women are more prone to it.

I was fortunate to attend a blogger meet organized to spread Thyroid awareness.

Eloquent and well-known endocrinologist, Dr Shehla Shaikh shed light on lesser known facts and bust some myths revolving around Thyroid disorders.
The event received support from much loved Bollywood diva Juhi Chawla
Juhi shared her personal experience of her husband and father in-law and one of her staff members who lead perfectly healthy and fulfilling lives despite having a thyroid disorder.
The Thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped organ located in the neck, secretes the hormones T3 and T4 which have an effect on almost all tissues of the body. The thyroid hormones affect the metabolic rate, influence growth, development and reproduction.

A dysfunctional thyroid gland may lead to the more common hypothyroidism (insufficient thyroid hormone) or the less common hyperthyroidism (excess thyroid hormone).
So any imbalance in the thyroid hormone will affect all parts of the body and its activities like breathing, BODY WEIGHT, cholesterol, muscle strength, menstrual cycle, pregnancy etc.

Thyroweight is a unique concept that helps increase awareness about Thyroid disorders. In most cases when we experience small to moderate weight gain, we dismiss it as something normal, blaming it on factors ranging from heredity, sedentary lifestyle, improper diet habits etc. This is where 'thyroweight' should flash, we need to seriously consider that the sudden, small weight gain could be due to an underlying thyroid disorder.
Some symptoms of thyroid disorders:

For more information please visit: http://thyroidindia.com/thyroweight/

A timely simple blood test, the Thyroid Function Test (TSH) can quite easily detect and rule out if you are suffering from a thyroid malfunction. #RuleOutThyroweight is something which every person needs to resolve if faced by symptoms of small weight gain, along with fatigue, hair fall etc.

Dr Shehla informed us that thyroid levels tend to fluctuate in certain women during pregnancy. Hence it is important to get the thyroid test done as soon as a pregnancy is confirmed.

It is also important to understand that one does not need to become depressed or worry relentlessly about it. With medical advancements, thyroid disorders can be very effectively be managed,
  • Through timely detection
  • With the aid of medicines
  • Following a routine healthy lifestyle
So dear friends, how often do you complain of fatigue, tiredness, lethargy, irritability, hair fall, weight gain along with changes in your menstrual cycle
If you do complain often then it's high time you made a trip to your physician/endocrinologist. It makes a lot of sense to get these symptoms diagnosed because these supposedly innocuous symptoms could well be because you are suffering from a Thyroid disorder. Give a thought to #RuleOutThyroweight if you are above 35 years of age, have a family history of thyroid disorders or have any of the above symptoms, just go and get yourself checked.

Our multi-tasking roles as mother, wife, daughter, employee, entrepreneur, etc. are not easy to pull off if we don't have good health. It therefore makes sense to not ignore these niggling symptoms and rule out a disorder like thyroid imbalance. And hey, the treatment is perfectly simple and treatable!
The earlier the better, why wait for conditions to worsen?

Loving your family and doing your duties is good but keeping yourself healthy so that you can continue to effectively do your job is more important!
You owe it to YOURSELF!

Having a Thyroid disorder should not dampen your spirits, energy or focus to succeed in any field or have a life as good anyone else!

Make the Shift from House to Dream Home with #TATA99HomesFestival

They were sitting in the backseat of the taxi, tired out after the day long house-warming party they'd just attended. Nina was quiet and Nikhil found it strange. "Hey, all okay?" he asked. Nina simply nodded and continued to stare blankly at the fleeting landscape of towering buildings they passed by.

The cab stopped at a traffic light. Nina looked out and the shining lights from a first floor flat caught her eye. The house had an exotic balcony filled with beautiful plants, glowing with fairy lights. There seemed to be some kind of party on. She could see the silhouette of people moving about behind gauzy curtains. The taxi started and Nina let out a little sigh. Now, Nikhil was really worried. "Babe, what's it? What's wrong? Why so quiet?" Nina decided to open up and tell Nik what was bothering her.

"Nikhil, it's been twelve years since we got married. Neel is ten and Varun eight. You've stopped having those blasted transfers. We've shifted nine houses in these years. I've seen neighbors not warming up to us, right after we tell them we've moved in on rent.
I am so tired of drifting around, not belonging to any place. I want to stop worrying whether we can drill nails on the wall or keep wishing we could have the walls painted before the festive season. You know how much I love decorating the house, but in a rented place, it all seems futile. Don't you think it's time we laid anchor? Change from a rented HOUSE to our own DREAM HOME?"

Nikhil's brows furrowed in worry as he realized Nina was genuinely upset. Many of his friends had settled down in their own homes years back while he was shunting about due to job transfers. He hadn't told Nina that he'd been secretly researching the real estate scenario, ever since he'd had a permanent posting. But the homes available seemed either too small, too far away or way beyond their budget. It seemed like they were destined to live in rented houses all their lives. The cab dropped them off and the couple made their way to the flat, each wrapped in his own thoughts.

A week later, while browsing the net, an ad caught Nikhil's eye. He couldn't believe his eyes! He couldn't wait to share his excitement with Nina. "Hey, Nina, come here quickly will you?" Nina came around to see a visibly thrilled Nikhil pointing to his laptop screen. As Nina went through what Nik showed her, she couldn't help screaming out, "Oh my God, oh my God!!! This is too, too, too good! We can do this, right, right Nik?"

"Yes, yes we can baby! I am confident we can easily afford this and the options are so good. Great construction, wonderful locations and best of all, it comes from such a trust-worthy name! I don't think we can get a better deal than this!"

Nina was practically dancing with joy. "Can you imagine Nik, how cool it would be to live in our own home? Not have a nagging landlord, or an indifferent one...no landlord! Woohoo! My own home, to do what I please with it! Can we please have lavender for our bedroom and turquoise for the boys? And lots and lots of plants, wind-chimes in the balcony, furniture from that darling online website I've been eyeing forever, a beautiful pooja-corner and, and....oh, there are so many things I've been dreaming of for my own sweet home! I think we should go in for a 3BHK, that would be so much better when parents come over, don't you think?" Nina simply couldn't hold still and eagerly went to inform the boys. Nikhil in the meanwhile registered himself on the website. He couldn't help smiling from ear-to-ear; they would finally be having their own dream home. He went to join Nina and the kids as they all rushed to hug him.
Hooray, dream home, here we come!
.
.
.

Are you dreaming of a home of your own but too traumatized by the heavy down payment, EMI's, escalating property costs, wary of big promises and under-quality construction by unreliable builders?
